Horizon 2020 at a glance

The title Horizon 2020 was chosen as a symbol of the fact that the new framework program should become a key instrument for archieving the objectives of the Innovation Union. The Innovation Union is to simplify the path from new ideas and knowledge to putting innovative products and services on the market. The Innovation Union will ensure global competitivness of the EU and economic growth with job creation. Emphasis on the contribution of science and research to the EU's economic growth is far more significant than in the previous framework programs. The Horizon 2020 program is considered one of a series of stimulus provision. However, the world-class science remains one of the Horizon's priorities.

The main objective of Horizon 2020 is sustainable development. Climate and resource efficiency funds will be complemented by other specific Horizon 2020 targets. At least, 60% of the Horizon 2020 budget will finance sustainable development projects ( most of the finance will contribute to the climate and the environment). About 35% of Horizon 2020 budget is expected to finance climate protection.

The Horizon 2020 is a strategic framework program that brings together all existing EU programs to support science, research and inovation. It is the successor of the 7th Framework Program for Science, Competitivness and Innovation (CIP), Entrepreneurship and Innovation Program (EIP), ICT Policy Support Program (ICT PSP), the Intelligent Energy Europe Program (IEE), the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT).

The Horizon 2020 budget supports more activities (like EURATOM, the European Institute of Innovation and Technology, the Joint Research Centre)
