Multilingualism is one of the two education & research pathways of Flagship 2: Europe in a changing world. The phenomenon of multilingualism is quite characteristic for Europe where many people speak two or more languages and live in multilingual families, environments, and societies. As such, multilingualism concerns both the individual and societal level. At the level of individuals, the most important research questions addressed by researchers in Flagship 2, combining expertise in linguistics, cultural studies and psychology, concern how multiple languages are acquired, and how a second/third language is taught best. At the level of the society, research questions concern the prestige of one or more specific languages over one or more others, as well as similarities and differences in discourse and communication patterns in and across the European languages.

The lecture is part of a Multilingualism lecture series organised in collaboration with the International Association of Multilingualism under the UW's Initiative of Excellence – Research University programme, coordinated by Prof. Agnieszka Otwinowska-Kasztelanic from the UW Faculty of Modern Languages.
