An official opening ceremony of The Herzl Center for Israel Studies (HCIS) at Charles University took place on September 9, 2019. The event was held as a part of the 8th International Conference on Israel Studies “Democracy in Challenging Times: Israel, Europe and the World,” organized by the European Association of Israel Studies (EAIS). 


Among the speakers were Vice-Rektor professor Lenka Rovná, Dead of the Faculty of Social Sciences Dr. Alice Němcová-Tejkalová, Executive Director of Israel Insitute Dr. Ariel Roth, Chair of the European Association of Israel Studies professor Joanna Dyduch, a founder of the Herzl Center Dr. Kateřina Králová, and Head of the Herzl Center Dr. Irena Kalhousová.


Founded in cooperation with the Israel Institute in Washington, DC, in 2018, The Herzl Center for Israel Studies (HCIS) is an interdisciplinary research and teaching institution dedicated to

the enhancement of knowledge and awareness about the modern State of Israel. The Center is the first academic institution in the Czech Republic fully dedicated to the study of Israeli society, politics, and history. To contribute to the expanding field of Israel Studies, the HCIS especially focuses on the study of historical and contemporary links between Central Europe and Israel.    


In furtherance of this mission, the Center:


  • Organizes courses, lectures and seminars on the topic of the modern State of Israel, its links with Central Europe, and its place in the Middle East;

  • Offers doctoral fellowships and promotes international and interdisciplinary research opportunities for PhD students in the field of Israel studies;

  • Encourages closer academic cooperation between Czech universities and Israeli, European, and United States institutions of higher education; and

  • Holds public events, conferences, and workshops related to the study of Israel.
